Job Title: Bus Monitor/Assistant Driver

GENERAL SUMMARY
Performs the daily tasks necessary to provide safe transportation to and from school for special needs students. Reports to the Director of Transportation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Greets the students.
Seats and secures (seatbelts, harnesses, etc.) the students on the bus.
Follows proper procedures concerning the lift and securing wheel chair(s) when necessary.
Maintains discipline of the students (keeping an accurate account of attendance, incidents, discipline problems, etc. to assist driver with write-ups).
Assists students with hygiene as needed.
Assists in clearing students from the bus if an accident occurs.
Monitors all students, making sure they are safe from danger.
Checks the bus after the route is over to ensure that no student is left behind and the bus is clean and ready for the next route.
Alerts the driver of any suspicious activity around the bus.
Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
Adheres to assigned schedule.
Transports only authorized students.
Discharges students only at authorized stops.
Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
Drive a route when necessary.
Performs all other duties and responsibilities as designated by the District Transportation Director.
Interacts with others in a respectful and cooperative manner at all times.
Willingly performs other duties as assigned or required.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High School Graduate. Good communication skills. Knowledge of school bus safety guidelines and regulations. Such alternatives to the above qualification as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Working toward, if not already certified, CDL license with B- or C- endorsement; P-endorsement; and S-endorsement and South Carolina School Bus Certificate. Must have no more than 4 points against license at any time.
Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of school District policies and procedures pertinent to the duties of the job. Thorough knowledge of handling discipline and working with students. Knowledge of basic clerical functions and modern office procedures and equipment.
Skills/Effort:
Written and verbal communication skills necessary to handle difficult and emotional situations. Skills in organization and maintenance of records and files. Ability to make decisions in non-routine situations requiring good judgment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, parents and other individuals/groups with interest in the District. Ability to handle disciplinary actions and disruptions.
Working Conditions:
Generally conducts duties in a vehicle with some exposure to environmental conditions. Physical demands are restricted to office work requiring the lifting/moving of items weighing up to 25 pounds. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment. No overnight travel is required.
Responsibility:
No budgetary responsibility.
Responsible for supervising assigned students on bus.
